Human trafficking surge feared for 2010 World Cup

The South Africa Bishop's Conference (SACBC) is warning that thousands of women will be trafficked for prostitution at the soccer World Cup 2010 in South Africa.

"We are expecting to see a sharp increase in trafficking of women forced to be prostituted for the Soccer World Championships, which will be held in South Africa in 2010," said Fr Chris Townsend, spokesman of the Bishop's Conference of South Africa, Botswana, and Swaziland, according to Agenzia Fides.

"South Africa has become a sort of "hub" for trafficking in human persons," says Fr Townsend. "Criminal organisations throughout the world, from Nigeria, Italy, Lebanon, China, all send thousands of women to be used as prostitutes in our country, while others are sent from South Africa to Europe and the Persian Gulf, for the same purpose.

"The arrival of thousands of tourists and fans for the World Cup has become a great source of encouragement for various organisations that carry out prostitution and trafficking in human persons. Thousands of women from all over the world are arriving - not only from other African nations, but from Asian and European nations as well."

The Catholic Church, along with other Christians communities and various non-governmental organisations, has started an awareness campaign for the people, so they can recognise and help the victims of trafficking.
