Chicago priest allegedly abused two boys

Officials with the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago said the archdiocese is looking into allegations a former local priest molested two boys.

An unidentified church official said the Rev. Edward Maloney, who is retired, allegedly abused two young boys nearly 25 years ago while serving at St. Mark Roman Catholic Church, The Chicago Tribune reported Friday.

The unidentified victims, now in their late 30s or early 40s, were in junior high school at the time of the alleged abuse incidents.

Auxiliary Bishop John Manz said in a letter to his parishioners that Maloney, who left St. Mark in 1996, was removed from ministry this year. Maloney served as St. Mark's priest for 21 years.

Maloney, who officially retired in 1999, denied the abuse allegations against him based on unspecified evidence deemed credible by church officials.

"I'm innocent of those charges," Maloney told the Tribune Thursday. "That's all I can say."

The Cook County state's attorney and the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services have been informed of the allegations.
