Roma accuse church of racism

The Czech Romany group Khamoro has accused Catholic church of racism as its local branch was fired from the hired area in the vicarage building, the daily Mlada fronta Dnes (MfD) writes today.

The group used it for its activities for children from the local housing project for 12 years. Khamoro chairman Emil Vorac said the notice was caused by racist church-goers from the local parish, headed by new priest Antonin Wasil.

Vicarage representatives said Khamoro owed money for the lease, MfD writes.

The church-goers also complained about the children's being naughty.

Vorac said he admitted the children were perhaps naughty, but dismissed the claim that the group owed anything.

Vorac said the dispute had started when a member of the parish council slapped a child.

"There were evident prejudices against the children. The church-goers made problems, expelling the children. The priest recently told me he did not want to have anything in common with Gypsies," Vorac said.

Wasil has denied the story, arguing that the church had the right to terminate the lease contract.

"It was the best thing we could do. We did not arrive at an agreement," he told MfD.

Khamoro offers a field programme to its clients, a consultancy office and clubhouses to Romany children.
