Jubilee celebrations in Belfast parish

The parish of St Oliver Plunkett in Belfast honoured two of their distinguished parish sisters at the weekend crowning 50 years of ministry.

Sr Claire Loughran and Sr Emmanuel Cullen, who joined the Sisters of Mercy in September 1959 and moved to St Oliver's in 1998, were honoured at a Mass celebrated by Bishop Noel Treanor.

Glen Phillips, chairman of the Parish Pastoral Council paid tribute to the two sisters: ''We, in St Oliver Plunkett, have been most blessed having them as part of our community for the last 11 years.

''They have helped us to prepare for the sacraments, enriched our liturgies with sacred rituals and beautiful music, opened up the Word of God to us through their teaching of the Scriptures, ministered to our sick, consoled those bereaved and been a friend to those of us in need.

''For all of that, and more, we thank you both immensely,'' he said.
