Dispute in diocese of Ferns over work on church roof

A dispute between two south Wexford companies led to a protest outside St. Aidan's Church in Ferns recently.

According to The Wexford People, the dispute has arisen between Goff Developments Limited, based at Horetown, Killinick, and Murrintown-based company Audsley Roofing Systems Ireland, over work on the refurbishment of the church roof.

Goff Developments was the main contractor for the major refurbishment project and Audsley Roofing Systems was hired as sub-contractors.

David Audsley says his company was to receive a total of €357,000 for the work, but that over eighteen thousand has not yet been paid.

However, a spokesperson for Goff Developments has claimed that there are still unresolved difficulties with the roof.

On September 3, last Mr Audsley wrote to Francis Goff, of Goff Developments, and claimed the sum has been outstanding since the completion of their roofing of the church on July 20, 2007.

“We have tolerated this situation for some considerable time, but now with the current economic climate and tight credit restrictions, we can no longer allow this to continue,” Mr Audsley wrote in his letter to Mr Goff.

Mr Audsley also wrote to the Parish Priest of Ferns, Fr Patrick Cushen, on September 3 to ask him to inform the parish committee that if Goff Developments did not pay the alleged debt then “we shall be removing zinc to the value of this amount from the roof of St. Aidan's Church as the material used remains the property of Audsley Roofing Systems until payment is received in full.”

On October 2, Mr Audsley again wrote to Mr Goff to say that, as they had not received the money he claims they are owed, he would be taking “whatever actions are necessary” to resolve the matter for his company.

The following, Saturday, morning he staged a protest outside Ferns Church.

However, the parish says it has paid Goff Developments in full and has no role in the dispute.

Mr Audsley, in a letter to Fr Cushen on November 28, said there were a couple of design issues with the roof initially, but that “we amended these ourselves and these proved successful.”

Responding to Mr Audsley, Fr Cushen wrote on December 4 that he had sought and received confirmation that Francis Goff of Goff Developments has been paid and “he is the one who is responsible for paying you.”

Mr Audsley also wrote to Fr. Jim Fitzpatrick, who was based in Ferns in 2007, but is now based in Screen / Curracloe.
