Church's confession box used as toilet

A SMALL community has been forced to install a CCTV system in their local church after the confessional box was defecated in twice.

The person responsible also used the altar cloth at Caherconlish Church, Co Limerick, to clean themselves afterwards.

Parishoners in the small east Limerick village were left "sickened and shocked" after the discovery of the two incidents where a person used the church's confessional box as a toilet.

The first incident occurred in mid-September, with the latest occurrence last Friday.

In a bid to prevent further incidents, a CCTV system is to be installed in the church.

It is understood that the incidents took place during daylight hours as the church is locked each night. No other damage was committed. "It was mentioned to gardai, but there is not a lot they can go on," Fr O'Gorman said.

He added that the person responsible for the defecation had serious personal issues.
