Vandals wreck priest’s memorial tree

A tree commemorating a famous Drogheda Augustinian priest, Fr Jim Kiely, has been destroyed by vandals.

The memorial tree was planted four years ago to commemorate Fr Kiely, who had played a huge role in developing sport in the town.

Fr Kiely died in 1995 and the tree was planted in St Dominic’s Park as part of a series of events to mark his tenth anniversary.

But it is now completely destroyed, after mindless vandals broke it in two.

Town councillor Frank Godfrey, who spearheaded the commemoration of Fr Kiely on the tenth anniversary of his death, said the people responsible should “hang their heads in shame. It cost about €50 to put the tree up but that's not important,” the councillor remarked.

“It represented the love Fr Kiely had of this town which he served for fourteen years and some yobs decided it would be good to tear it down,”

“These people will have to meet their maker at some time,” Mr Godfrey added. “It's terrible that this took place - that tree was supposed to be there forever, overlooking the Boyne and close to the walkway that Fr Kiely often used.”

However, plans are already afoot to have the tree replaced on the same site and it is hoped that sponsorship might be forthcoming to assist.
