ID Cards to be issued to Ferns priests

The Diocese of Ferns is to embark on a new initiative, which will see all ‘Priests of Good Standing’ in the County Wexford diocese issued with an ID Card.

Speaking on Newstalk 106FM, Ferns Diocesan Communications Officer Fr. John Carroll confirmed this week that the diocese is the process of ordering the new cards, which will be carried by priests to enable them to say Mass outside of the Diocese of Ferns.

The ID cards will include the priest's photo and contact details for the Diocese of Ferns.

The card will also contain a statement on the card from the diocese’s Bishop Denis Brennan confirming that the priest in question “is a priest of good standing in the Diocese of Ferns” and, “I hereby request that he be facilitated in celebrating the sacraments.”

The back of the card features a Latin statement, which is the 'Celebret'. Until the new cards are distributed this has always taken the form of a letter which the bishop gave to a priest in order that the priest may obtain permission in another diocese to say Mass and is not under investigation or has not been censured for any reason.

Fr Carroll also confirmed that a card would not be issued to a priest if there were any questions about his fitness to preach.
