Dallas church sponsors billboards about gays

The Promise Metropolitan Community Church in Dallas said it wants to provoke discussion, sponsoring billboards that proclaim "The early church welcomed a gay man" and "Jesus affirmed a gay couple."

"We want to initiate dialogue around 'Would Jesus Discriminate'," the church's senior pastor Rev Jon Haack said, quoting the name of the advertising campaign, The Dallas Morning News reported.

Below each statement on the billboards, a Bible verse is referred to: Matthew 8:5-13 and Acts 8:26-40, respectively. The passges are elaborated on the campaign webesite, WhyWouldWe.org, but other churches are disputing the interpretation.

"We as Southern Baptists would disagree with the interpretation of the Scripture," said Dr Roger Sing Oldham, a member of the Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention.

Oldham questioned the sources used for the explanations, which the report says are mostly books about homosexuality and the church.

The billboards were bought by a group of five area Metropolitan Community Churches, which are part of the world's largest predominantly gay and lesbian denomination.
