Wexford Holy Font is Returned

An 800-year-old Holy water font stolen from the ruins of a church was returned to the town’s grateful parishioners last weekend.

The font, which locals credited with curing minor ailments such as warts, was stolen from the ruins of Bannow Church in Wexford in early August.

Speaking this week local priest Fr Jim Keogh said his parishioners were delighted about the granite font’s safe return.

“The font was found in the local area and was returned to us,” Fr Keogh said.

“It’s a huge relief because this font represents a key part of our history. Gardaí investigating the theft believe the thieves would have to have been organised prior to the crime."

“They would have needed a van to get it out of there,” a local Garda source revealed.
