Catholic cleric Mayalla dies of heart attack

The Bishop of Mwanza Roman Catholic Church Archdiocese Anthony Petro Mayalla died yesterday of heart attack, the Roman Catholic Church has announced.

The 69-year old bishop died suddenly in Mwanza City at around 2:30pm yesterday.

A statement issued by the Director of Communication with the Tanzania Episcopal Conference (TEC), Father Revocatus Makonge, said efforts to save his life at the Weil Bugando Medical Centre (WBMC) proved futile.

"The Bishop woke up healthy this morning and went on with his duties as usual until at around 10:00am when he suddenly fell sick and was rushed to the referral hospital,"Father Makonge said in the statement.

Bishop Mayalla, who is the founder of the WBMC and the Saint Augustine University of Tanzania (SAUT), was born on April 23, 1940 at Nera village in Kwimba district.

He received his primary and secondary education in the district before proceeding to Loyola University in Chicago in the United States, where he successfully pursued a degree in education between 1973 and 1975.

He was ordained priest at Ibindo Parish in Mwanza Diocese on December 20, 1970 and managed to raise through ranks --becoming Musoma Diocese Bishop on February 22, 1979.

Father Makonge said Bishop Mayalla served as President of the TEC Council whenl he was Bishop of Musoma between June 1983 and a year after he was installed Archbishop of Mwanza on February 28, 1988.

TEC had already started funeral arrangements, he said, adding that further information regarding the funeral ceremony would be issued by the Archdiocese's office in the city.

May God rest his soul in eternal peace.
