Bishop of Cork & Ross Urges Employers to Help Jobless

The Bishop of Cork and Ross has pleaded with employers and voluntary groups to find meaningful work for the thousands of jobless.

Bishop John Buckley made the appeal while he addressed more than 1,000 pilgrims who turned out for the devotions at the Shrine of the Most Holy Rosary on the Lee Road in Cork city recently on the Feast of the Assumption.

The 58th Shrine Devotions to mark the feast of the Assumption saw attendees from prayer groups and parishes across Cork gather at Our Lady’s Hospital Gate and march in procession to the shrine.

Bishop Buckley urged people not to lose hope or faith as the country battled through its worst economic crisis ever, which has seen dole queues swell and poverty spread.

He added, “We have been through difficult periods before and we can get through it again if we believe in ourselves.”

Bishop Buckley also made a direct appeal to employers and voluntary groups to help the jobless back into the workforce.

He added that the great devotion Cork people have to Our Lady was reflected in the many shrines devoted to her around the city and county.

“Irish people have always turned to Our Lady in times of trouble,” he said.
