Pope urges Iraq to work for peace following church bombings

Pope Benedict XVI called on Iraq's leaders Monday to work to ensure peace between the country's communities following bomb attacks on churches that left four dead.

In a message published in the Vatican newspaper l'Osservatore Romano, the pope urged "the authorities to do everything possible to promote fair and peaceful coexistence between all elements of the Iraqi population".

The head of the Roman Catholic Church said he would "pray for the conversion of the hearts of those who carried out the violence", in the message sent by Vatican Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone to Iraqi church leaders.

The four people killed close to a church in the Al-Mohandiseen district of Baghdad on Sunday were all Christians. Another 32 people were wounded in seven attacks over a 48-hour period.

The violence led to streets being cordoned off in Baghdad and a curfew being imposed in two predominantly Christian towns close to Mosul.
