Lay Catholic group fears demise amid budget woes

A lay Catholic group founded in the worst days of the church's clergy sex abuse scandal says it may be forced to cease operations unless it raises $60,000 by the end of this month.

Leaders of Voice of the Faithful sent a letter Monday to members saying it is "at the crossroads of financial survival."

The group says it needs to raise the money to pay its operating costs for July and August.

After that, the group hopes to raise additional money so it can continue to operate long term.

Voice of the Faithful was founded in the Boston area in 2002 during the clergy sex abuse crisis and has said it has about 35,000 members.

Its mission is to give lay people a greater role in the Catholic Church.
