ACBC calls for WYD pilgrimage providers

The Australian Catholic Bishops Conference is inviting expressions of interest for appointment as the official pilgrimage provider to the Australian Catholic Church for local World Youth Day pilgrims heading to Madrid in 2011.

The Bishops Commission of Pastoral Life said an "indicative estimate" shows that between 3,000 to 5,000 pilgrims may seek to make the journey to Madrid, after the success of WYD08 inSydney, in pilgrim groups of varying sizes.

The closing date for the expressions of interest is July 31.

"The successful Pilgrimage Provider will be selected on their demonstrated successful experience with international pilgrimages and travel arrangements, their understanding of the Catholic Church and WYDs, and their financial viability," said the commission executive secretary Bruce Ryan in a statement.

"The Official WYD Pilgrimage Provider will be accountable to the Bishops Commission for Pastoral Life, through the Bishops Delegate for Youth, and will provide full time staffing support for the development of pilgrim materials and a suitable budget to support the operation of the national committee."
