Pope speaks of 'spiritual closeness' to crash victims

Pope Benedict XVI has expressed his "spiritual closeness" to the 228 people on board an Air France plane that vanished over the Atlantic.

The pontiff said on Tuesday that those on the flight had been "severely tested" and spoke of "divine mercy" for the presumed victims of the accident in a message.

The Brazilian air force located a seat from a plane, an orange buoy and jet fuel slicks floating 1,100km off Brazil's northeast coast - in a remote stretch of the Atlantic Ocean where the flight from Rio de Janeiro bound for Paris disappeared early on Monday.

Officials, however, have not yet confirmed that the debris was from missing Air France flight 447.
