Poles do not go to church

Polish daily “Polska” published unofficial results of counting of faithful in Polish churches.

Every single Polish parish has to count its faithful who attends Sunday mass.

According to the daily, only 38 % of our society go to church every day, what means that it is 6 % less than last year.

It is first ever such a dramatic decrease in faithful number, within 30 years.

According to the Institute of Statistics of Catholic Church the biggest annual decrease was 2 %.

Why does Polish society not visit church every Sunday? Priests explain that their biggest problem is …bad weather.

“This year counting was carried out on the 23rd of November when the weather was snowy and windy. Many people decided to stay home, especially older faithful” – explains priest Dariusz Gącik who is a spokesman of the diocese in Kielce.

There 11 % less faithful than last year.

Polish Church seems to be similar to the Church in Western Europe. Churches and basilicas are empty because of small number of faithful.

However Italy is believed to be religious country, only 30 % visit mass every week.

In Spain only 17 % go to church every Sunday while in Germany only 14 %.

According to sociologists there will be less and less faithful in Polish churches, because religion and its science is not so popular as it used to be.
