Pope Benedict XVI will impose the woolen bands, called palliums, around the necks of new archbishops on June 29 Monday during the Solemnity of Sts Peter and Paul at 9.30 AM at the Vatican Basilica, as a symbol of their authority and responsibility.The pope, too, wears a pallium over his chasuble when celebrating Mass, but his is noticeably different — at least for the time being — from the palliums worn by archbishops.
The Sri Lankan new Archbishop of Colombo Malcolm Ranjith and the Archbishop of Bangkok Francis Xavier Kriengsak Kovithavanij are the only two Asians among the archbishops named in the past year who will be receiving their palliums from Pope Benedict on the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul.
The pallium, worn by the Pope and archbishops, symbolizes the lost sheep that is found again, carried on the shoulders of the Good Shepherd, and the Lamb crucified for the salvation of humanity.
It also symbolizes, in part, the Pope’s concession of authority and communion to heads of major local Churches.
