Franciscans reelect Spain's Carballo as leader

The largest of the Franciscan orders of the Roman Catholic Church says it has reelected Brother Jose Rodriguez Carballo of Spain as its leader.

An assembly of Franciscan representatives meeting in the hilltown of Assisi chose the 56-year-old Carballo on Thursday to lead the 15,000 members of the Order of Friars Minor until 2015. He was first elected in 2003.

The Friars Minor are the largest of the three Franciscan branches, which also include the Conventuals and the Capucins. St. Francis of Assisi founded the Franciscans 800 years ago, committed to working with the poor.
