Department stands by its stinging criticism of Muslim school

THE Department of Education yesterday stood over its damning criticism of the standards in a Dublin primary school.

A draft inspection report caused alarm when it was sent to authorities at the the north Dublin Muslim School two months ago.

It found that there were unacceptable standards of management, teaching and learning.

The draft report was revealed in the Irish Independent on Wednesday, and yesterday the final version was officially published.

The only minor change was a slight toning down of criticism of the acting principal.

The report was one of 137 school inspection reports published by the department yesterday.

The other reports were much more positive, with only muted criticisms made.

Many of the reports refer to the effective use of middle management posts. But they were written before the moratorium on filling these posts when they become vacant.

John Carr, the general secretary of the INTO, said the government embargo will see hundreds of these positions lost this year.

He said yesterday's reports make it clear that promoted teachers ensure that schools run smoothly, effectively and efficiently.

"Here we have the Education Department testifying to the good work of these teachers. Yet with a stroke of a pen the Finance Department embargoes these posts in schools."
