Cloyne inquiry in 'early stages'

The Dublin Archdiocese Commission of Investigation (DACOI) has begun its investigation into the handling of allegations of abuse by State and Church authorities in the Diocese of Cloyne.

However, a spokesperson for the Commission insisted that the investigation was ''at the very early stages'' and was unable to give an indication on how long the inquiry is likely to take.

Investigate

The DACOI was ordered to investigate the handling of allegations by the Diocese of Cloyne, the Health Service Executive (HSE) and Gardai by the Minister for Children Barry Andrews TD.

The inquiry came after allegations of mishandling of abuse emerged in the Cork-based diocese.

The furore over the mishandling eventually led to Bishop John Magee's decision to step aside and Pope Benedict's appointment of Archbishop Dermot Clifford as Apostolic Administrator of Cloyne.

Support group One in Four is calling for the terms of reference of the inquiry to be extended to take in all allegations of abuse.

New complaints

At present, the Commission is only investigating the handling of complaints that have already been made against priests serving in the Cloyne Diocese and has no authority to hear new complaints.

The Commission has placed advertisements in newspapers and radio stations asking people who have made complaints to come forward. The inquiry had initially been expected to report by mid-July, however, that date now seems impossible.
