Pope Benedict gets a new, white ride

Certainly not the best looking Popemobile to come around the Vatican compound, Fiat’s Ducato Panorama commercial van is nevertheless fully accommodating.

Pope Benedict XVI was visiting Abruzzo, Italy, a region that has recently been plagued with earthquakes, and the Italian Civil Defense was administering relief.

The full-size Fiat, which is made in the vicinity in a joint venture with PSA-Peugeot-Citroen, was better suited than anything in the Vatican garage that houses a sizeable collection, including a Volvo XC90, BMW X5, Volkswagen Phaeton W12, plus a custom-built Mercedes-Benz G-Class.

This particular Ducato Panorama iswhite with Italian Civil Defense blue accents and specially fitted with white leather sofas, more comfortable and better suited for His Holiness’ needs.

He will be touring tent camps set up to shelter now homeless victims, as well as a basilica in the region that was damaged by the quake.

Should Chrysler survive bankruptcy and form a strong alliance with Fiat, the van would likely replace the current Mercedes-sourced Dodge Sprinter.
