"My client expressed the will to be baptised on the central square of the Vatican when he is released from jail," Ozhan said.

"We forwarded this request to the Vatican through the intermediary of a friend of ours who is in Italy and who confirmed to me by telephone phone that the Vatican authorities had received it."

Ozhan also said his client wishes to make a documentary in the Vatican. He did not elaborate.

January 18, 2010 is now said to be the earliest possible date for his release, but media reports have suggested he may be freed as late as 2014.
