Recovering NY archbishop to celebrate Masses

The recently hospitalized archbishop of New York will return to the altar and lead several Holy Week services.

Cardinal Edward Egan celebrated a Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan late Thursday afternoon.

He also will preach on Good Friday and conduct Easter Mass.

The 77-year-old Egan was in the hospital earlier this week with stomach pains.

A heart condition was discovered while he was there, and he will eventually get a pacemaker.

Egan is retiring next week and will be succeeded by Milwaukee Archbishop Timothy Dolan.

The New York archbishop holds great sway over the direction of the Roman Catholic Church in the U.S.

The archdiocese serves 2.5 million Catholics in about 400 parishes in New York City and its northern suburbs.
