Kerry introduces rigorous child protection programme

A retired Garda superintendent has been appointed by the Bishop of Kerry, Dr Bill Murphy, to supervise the training of some one hundred child protection volunteers from 53 parishes in the diocese.

Supt Fred Garvey will be tasked with the training programme, which will cover all diocesan activities relating to children, as well as those involving choirs, altar servers and liturgy groups.

Supt Garvey will be assisted by a doctor, a psychologist, a solicitor, other retired Gardai and teachers as well as diocesan priests, in implementing the new child protection guidelines.

Dr Murphy said this week that the Kerry diocese would do all in its power to create safe environments for children and young people and would protect them from physical, sexual or emotional abuse or neglect.

''We recognise that all involved in working with children and young people have a special duty of care towards them. We are committed to putting procedures in place through which this care is put into effect so that the rights of children and young people to actively, participate in the life of the Church is upheld,'' Bishop Murphy said.

Tralee curate, Fr Padraig Walsh will deal directly with any allegations made in future.

Other leading members of the new Kerry child protection team include; Fr Gearoid Walsh (chairman), Msgr Dan O'Riordan, Fr John Quinlan and Fr George Hayes , retired Garda sergeant, John Murrihy, retired Garda Michael Smith, and retired teachers, Bride Cronin and Sheila Goulding.
