DUBLIN’S Archbishop Diarmuid Martin is being tipped to get one of the Vatican’s top jobs according to reports in Rome.In an article on forthcoming changes in the Roman curia, the respected La Repubblica paper reports that Dr Martin’s is "among the stronger candidacies" to take over as president of the pontifical council for justice and peace.
The council is currently headed by Cardinal Renato Martino.
La Repubblica’s Vatican- watcher Orazio La Rocca reports that Cardinal Martino is working closely with Pope Benedict on the pontiff’s forthcoming social encyclical but is expected to be replaced soon after the publication of Benedict’s much-anticipated third encyclical which could be published as early as May 1.
However, even if he is successful and gets the prestigious appointment, he may not be in a position to leave Dublin before the summer if the Dublin Report is not released.
Responding to a request for a comment on the speculation, a spokeswoman for the Archbishop said: "Archbishop Martin has a challenging task as archbishop of Dublin which he enjoys. He has no expectation of that situation changing. Indeed, Archbishop Martin is embarking on wide-ranging programme of renewal and development in the archdiocese." +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The Archbishop's remarks should bring us a ho ho ho and a ha ha ha because that man has taken little interest in things around the Dublin Diocese and must live with his body in Drumcondra but his head in the clouds over Rome waiting for his recall there.
ReplyDeleteThat is the way it looks to most of us anyway. A diplomat that only has to deal with what he would term LARGE IMPORTANT matters not the nitty gritty in the individual Parishes under his care in the Dublin Diocese.
If he departs in the summer it is not like he will actually be missed when he really does not bother that much about how things are running on the ground around him or to put it more clearly being run INTO the ground around him.
He is a sore disappointment after the way he was promoted as a man of justice, caring, helping the underdog and marginalised. Again what a ho ho ho and a ha ha ha from the publilcity machine that he did not live up to.
He won't be missed and his replacement can't do much worse than him.
Have Ryanair got a one way ticket to Rome S-O-O-N. I would even offer to pay for it myself! Maybe he could take a local Bishop in all but name who also is a waste of space with him - any menial jobs for the boys available?
It seems the more stoic and debonair they are to the abuses within the church, the greater the office of reward that awaits them.
ReplyDeleteGood luck to him, his new job in the Sun, crucifix and clothes.
I agree with Anonymous.
ReplyDeleteI am waiting for a certain trouble maker of a Parish Priest to be moved up the rank to Bishop!!
He did Confirmations today in the local Parish so Diarmuid Martin may as well give him his new coloured frocks, hat and let him continue with his good acting job as that is all he is capable of. He deserves an Oscar for his recent conning of the Parish. Caring and concern for his flock is definitely NOT on this man's Agenda so under the rules of the Church he will go far up the ranks.
Maybe Archbishop move him NOW and get him out of our way and off so some Bishop's Palace in a remote area where he can do little harm to others and just sit there on a little throne and muse over how great he thinks he is!!!!
We are being unfair on Archbishop Martin. His record on child abuse prevention is far far better than any other Irish bishop. He has been the most pro-active in establishing the Child Protection Guidelines and insisting on them being audited to ensure they exist in practice and not just theory. He has not been afraid to break ranks with his fellow Irish bishop's cosy consensus that all is well with the application of the Guidelines.
ReplyDeleteSee here http://tinyurl.com/ccuwaj for Irish Times report on Archbishop's Martin's concerns that there may not be a rigorous uniform application of the Child Protection Guidelines across Irish Dioceses and Religious Institutions. (Which is Bishop-speak for 'There damn well isn't!')

See here http://tinyurl.com/a6txel for Irish Times report on Archbishop Martin welcoming the priest - who called for Bishop's Magee resignation - at the end of his Walk of Atonement. In start contrast to the shameful conduct of Cardinal Brady and some other bishops who supported Bishop Magee in his refusal to resign.
Granted, Martin has the great advantage of having completely clean hands in relation to Irish clerical child abuse, being out of the country as a Vatican diplomat until he was appointed to Dublin Diocese. Nevertheless he has been head and shoulders above any other member of the Irish hierarchy in trying to deal with this on-going problem.
He deserves credit in that, very important, area at least.
