New head for Pontifical Council for Migrants

Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Archbishop Antonio Maria Veglio as president of the Pontifical Council for Migrants.

The Italian prelate, who had been serving as secretary of the Congregation for Eastern Churches, replaces Cardinal Renato Martino, who had passed the mandatory retirement age of 75.

However, Cardinal Martino retains his other curial position, as president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace.

The cardinal might remain in that position until the release of the Pope's long-awaited encyclical on Catholic social teaching.
