Nazareth mayor says Pope Benedict will celebrate mass in town

The mayor of Nazareth said Tuesday Pope Benedict will celebrate a public mass there when he visits the Holy Land in May.

Ramiz Jeraisi said the mass will take place in the town of Jesus' boyhood May 14.

He said the mass will be held at Mount Precipice, where tradition holds a mob pursued Jesus and tried to throw him from a cliff.

Benedict is scheduled to visit Jerusalem, Bethlehem and other Christian sites during his tour.

The late pope John Paul came to the Holy Land in a 2000 pilgrimage, visiting Israel and the Palestinian territories.

That was the first official visit by a Pope to Israel.

The Vatican and Israel established diplomatic ties in 1994 after hundreds of years of painful relations between Catholicism and Judaism.
