Bishops 'unaware' of proposed visit by Pope

A spokesman for the Catholic bishops said they were unaware of a proposed visit to Omagh and Dublin next year by Pope Benedict XVI.

He said it would be most unusual for the Pope to have his diary filled a year in advance and said the story was "speculative".

The Sunday Telegraph had reported that the Pope would visit the United Kingdom and would travel to Omagh, the scene of the worst single massacre of the Northern Ireland Troubles as well, as part of the visit.

According to the report, Pope Benedict XVI would also visit Dublin.

The Catholic bishops had issued an invitation to the Pope in 2006 to visit Ireland and he had received it with thanks, the spokesman added.
