Vietnam and Vatican to discuss establishing ties

Foreign ministry spokesman, Le Dung, says the Vietnamese government has agreed to a meeting next week with the Vatican to discuss issues relating to the establishment of ties.

The meeting, the first of its kind for the Vietnam-Vatican Joint Working Group, will take place in Hanoi on February 16 and 17, the spokesman said in reply to a Vietnamese News Agency query on the Vatican delegation's forthcoming visit.

This demonstrates Vietnam's response to the Vatican's request regarding the issue in accordance with its foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, multilateralisation and diversification, Mr Dung said.

According to Dung, the Vietnamese delegation attending the meeting will be led by Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Quoc Cuong, while the Vatican dignitary delegation will be headed by Under-Secretary of State for Relations with States, Monsignor Pietro Parolin.
