St Mary's priest refuses to resign

A Brisbane Catholic priest is poised to be sacked on Wednesday after refusing to resign over unorthodox practices.

Father Peter Kennedy, the priest in charge of St Mary's South Brisbane parish, said he had received a letter on Tuesday giving him until noon (AEST) Wednesday to resign or be removed from the parish.

He had already been asked by Archbishop of Brisbane John Bathersby to leave the parish by this Saturday, after complaints his parish was no longer in communion with the Roman Catholic Church.

But Fr Kennedy said he would not resign.

"We received a letter from the Archbishop this morning (Tuesday) to say that unless I resign by midday tomorrow, then he would revoke my position as administrator of St Mary's," Fr Kennedy told ABC TV.

"I am not going to resign and I am not going anywhere either."

He said he was not angry with Archbishop Bathersby or the priest taking over as administrator on the weekend, Fr Ken Howell.

The 71-year-old priest has come under fire for allowing women to preach and blessing homosexual couples.

Catholic authorities also raised questions about the validity of baptisms at the church.

But many see the parish as having a unique ministry to the poor, indigenous people and the marginalised.
