Limerick to host biggest theology conference

The largest gathering of Catholic theologians seen in Ireland will take place in April.

Some 800 theologians from across Europe are set to gather together when Mary Immaculate College in Limerick hosts the biennial International Congress of the European Society for Catholic Theology (ESCT).

Entitled ''The Eager Longing of Creation - Interdisciplinary Theological Perspectives on Ecology and Economy'', the delegates will discuss Christian responsibility for the environment.

Bishop Donal Murray will officially open the Congress, and the main Eucharitsic celebration will be led by Cardinal Seán Brady.

The ESCT has as its mission the promotion of the academic discipline of Catholic theology primarily at the intersection where Church and society meet.

Members of the Society work at theological institutes, universities, academies, and seminaries, as well as in various Church and State agencies around the continent.

In another first, a commitment by the Irish business employers' federation IBEC to off-set the conference's carbon footprint means the April Congress meeting will be the first carbon neutral conference in the country.
