Father Rosica named consultant to Vatican communications council

Pope Benedict XVI had named Basilian Father Thomas Rosica, executive director of Canada's Salt and Light Television, as a consultant to the Pontifical Council for Social Communications.

Father Rosica is a native of Rochester, N.Y., where he was ordained in 1986.

A Scripture scholar, he was director of Catholic chaplaincy at the University of Toronto when the Canadian bishops appointed him chief executive officer and national director for World Youth Day and Pope John Paul II's visit to Toronto, which took place in July 2002.

He is the founding director of Salt and Light Television, Canada's first Catholic television network, which was established in 2003.

Father Rosica served as the English-language press-briefing officer for the 2008 world Synod of Bishops on the Bible.
