Pope prays Obama will promote peace

Pope Benedict XVI on Tuesday urged Barack Obama to boost world peace and fight global hunger and poverty.

In a telegram sent to the 44th president on his inauguration day, the pope said he was ''praying'' that Obama would ''promote understanding, cooperation and peace among nations''.

''In our time, so many of our brothers and sisters around the world are longing to be freed from poverty, hunger and violence,'' the pope said.

He also voiced the hope that the American people would ''continue to find in its significant religious and spiritual heritage the ethical principles needed to build a free and fair society, marked by respect for the dignity, equality and rights of all its members, especially the poor, the marginalised and those without a voice''.
