Death of former Hexham and Newcastle bishop

The Bishop Emeritus of Hexham and Newcastle, Hugh Lindsay, died suddenly on Monday at the age of 81.

He was bishop in the north-east diocese from 1974-1992.

His funeral will be celebrated at St Mary’s Cathedral in Newcastle on Monday February 2 at noon.

Bishop Lindsay, who was born in Newcastle, started his studies at Ushaw in 1943 but was conscripted for military service from September 1945 until January 1948. He then returned to his studies.

The bishop is survived by his sister Mary Lindsay who lives in a home run by the Little Sisters of the Poor in Newcastle.
