Vatican Radio comes to Ireland via RTÉ digital

Vatican Radio is now available via RTÉ thanks to modern technology. RTE’s new digital radio station RTÉ Choice is running Vatican Radio every night between 8.44pm and 9.00pm for world news, commentary and announcements by Pope Benedict XVI.

“It is a very popular radio station world wide and there is a high demographic of Catholics in Ireland,” Jack Fox, Radio Press and Publicity Office, told ciNews.

He explains that the 15 minute progamme will feature commentary by the Pope and the Vatican on day to day events and so will offer a Catholic slant.

If there is big listenership for Vatican radio coverage may be increased in the future.

Vatican Radio produces more than 42,000 hours of simultaneous broadcasting and coverage of international news and religious celebrations and is considered the voice of The Pope and The Church to its global congregation.

Commenting on Vatican Radio’s addition to the RTÉ Choice week Ronan Kelly, RTÉ Choice scheduler, says: “It’s fantastic now that we can listen to Vatican Radio in Ireland. Just like so many other programmes on RTÉ Choice we’re given fresh and different views on the stories that make the news day in, day out. With Vatican Radio we have the opportunity to be kept up to date with the Catholic Church whilst catching all the latest world news at the same time.”

Since the Vatican Radio station began broadcasting in 1931, it has not only reported historical events but has also made them.

Throughout World War 2 Vatican Radio served as a source for news and propaganda for the Allied Forces whilst being surrounded by the fascist Italian state.

Warnings and threats didn’t prevent Vatican Radio from broadcasting to an unbelieving world where Poles and Jews were being rounded up and forced into ghettos.

The historical radio station broadcasts to 61 different countries, in 47 different languages and now it’will have a presence in Ireland via RTÉ Choice.

Listeners may tune into Vatican Radio on RTÉ Choice online at www.rte.ie/digitalradio.

Once on the RTE radio website, click on Digital radio, chose the option to listen live to RTE Choice and at the appointed time the Vatican radio will be playing.

Most computers have the Microsoft Media and Real Player software required.

Vatican radio can also be accessed on DAB digital radio sets in the Greater Dublin area, Cork and Limerick every night at 8.44pm.
