`Rosary priest' saint tribunal established

The American Archdiocese of Baltimore has hosted the first session of the Cause for Sainthood of Irish-born Father Patrick Peyton, the famed ''Rosary priest''.

Originally launched in 2002, the Cause reached this latest stage on November 20 when Archbishop Edwin F. O'Brien presided over the appointment of members of the ecclesiastical tribunal, which now begins its investigation into the life and ministry of Fr Peyton.

Fr Peyton earned his affectionate title when, in the 1940s and 50s, he used his access to the airwaves, both on radio and television to encourage families to pray together and to use the rosary.

He remains famous for his slogan ''The family that prays together, stays together.''

Fr Peyton was born in Co Mayo on January 9, 1909.

In 1928, together with his brother, Patrick, emigrated to America, where both subsequently joined the priesthood, entering the seminary of Notre Dame, Indiana in 1929.

However, he was soon diagnosed with incurable tuberculosis and not expected to survive until ordination.

Trusting to prayer, Fr Peyton defied medical expectations and was ordained in 1941.

It was his gratitude for his restored health that led Fr Peyton on his 'prayer crusade' until his death in 1992.

His Cause was officially launched in Knock in 2002.
