Zambia archbishop angry at government attack on priest

Lusaka Roman Catholic Archbishop Telesphore Mpundu has lashed at Southern Province government minister Daniel Munkombwe for saying that "some church leaders are being arrested because they are becoming political agents of genocide".

It was an apparent reference to the arrest and detention on 15 November of the manager of the Catholic-owned Radio Icengelo station in Kitwe, the Rev. Frank Bwalya, over a post-poll programme he conducted which was critical of the way the October general election was carried out.

Bwalya has since been charged with publishing materials intended to cause division in the community and will appear in court on 27 November, Munkombwe said.
