Ugandan call for more women priests

The Church of Uganda Clergy Women Fellowship (CUCWF) has urged the East African church to increase the number of female priests in the province.

Meeting in Kampala on Sept 23, the women clergy association said that while the church had begun training deaconesses in 1964, and had been one of the first African provinces to ordain women, the number of women clergy had not kept up with the growth of the church.

The Rev Prudence Kaddu stated that while the province had 30 dioceses and close to 10 million members, there were only 150 women priests and deacons.

Participants at the meeting urged the church to set aside funds to train women clergy.

They also urged the church to name Africa’s first women bishop.

“We need more female parish priests,” Ms Kaddu told the New Vision newspaper, and “it is high time we also had women bishops.”
