Bishop of Dromore in vocation push

The Bishop of Dromore has said that every Christian must understand that they have a unique vocation from God.

In a pastoral letter published to mark the ongoing Year of Vocation, Dr John McAreavey traces the origins of the Christian notion of vocation as found in the scriptures.

Unique calling

Underscoring the importance of priestly vocations in the life of the Church, the Bishop says that ''The origins of a call to the priesthood are complex and unique to each person.

''For a young man the first hint of a call to follow Jesus as a priest in the line of the apostles can begin as a niggling question, an attraction to prayer, a love for the Mass or a desire to serve the sick,'' he said.

Encouraging people to continue to pray for vocations to the priesthood, he says ''the primary way we can promote vocations to the priesthood and religious life is through prayer...Those charged with the formation of our children and young people have the privilege and duty to teach them how to pray''.

Christian Marriage, Bishop McAreavey affirmed has a vital role to play in the life of the community.

''The sacramental love of baptised husband and wife makes God's love real in the world of everyday things.''
