Bishop hails reduction of young people on adult psychiatric wards

The Anglican Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham has welcomed moves to reduce the number of young people held on adult psychiatric wards in the UK.

But Bishop George Cassidy called on the Government to bear in mind the section of the Mental Health Act code that calls for children to be given access to “age-appropriate leisure activities and facilities” as well as facilities for visits from parents, siblings and carers.

At question time in the House of Lords Baroness Thornton, for ministers, replied: “We want children and young people to be treated as children and young people in the right kind of environment and for them to have access to age-appropriate leisure activities and visiting facilities to enable them to remain in contact with their parents and friends.

“We expect hospitals to take action to ensure that this objective is achieved for all under-18-year-olds.”

She said that the situation was improving and that in the first quarter of 2006/07, there had been 75 under-16-year-olds in adult wards, whereas in the first quarter of this year the number was 16 and “that figure is going down”.
