Sikh holy scriptures brought from UK to India for ‘last rites’

An Air India flight from London booked exclusively for carrying old copies of the Guru Granth Sahib, Sikh holy scriptures, and accompanying volunteers arrived at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi earlier this week.

The books, which have several torn pages, will be given ‘last rites’ in fire.

The 500 copies of the scriptures were brought by 32 volunteers of the management of the Gurudwara Mai Pago in Delhi’s Karol Bagh area, reported The Times of India daily.

The flight cost 64,00,000 Indian rupees (around 75,700 GBP).

The 500 books were kept on 300 seats in the flight that arrived at 2.30 am. The volunteers carried these books on their heads to offload them at a special bay.

The Gurudwara Mai Pago brings old copies of the scriptures from various parts of the world to clean them and eventually send them to other Gurudwaras that give them their last rites by offering them to fire in a ceremony.
