Copper thieves hit cathedral

Police are investigating the theft of copper downpiping from Hobart's St Mary's Cathedral.

Early last Friday thieves ripped the pipes off the exterior of the historic building.

The building had only just undergone an extensive restoration which included new roofing and downpipes.

The Catholic Church says the stolen pipes are worth thousands of dollars and the building has stonework was also damaged.

The Cathedral's Administrator Father Brian Nichols says whoever took the material did a thorough job:

"They've actually damaged some of the stonework too in the attempt to get the pipes off the walls of the cathedral," Father Nichols said.

"But as you look all around they've gone all around up to the roof level."
