Catholic club slams Smirnoff alcopop

Campbelltown Catholic Club in Sydney's south west has backed a move to refuse to stock a premixed Smirnoff alcopop drink with seven per cent alcohol.

ABC News reports pubs and clubs in the Campbelltown region are refusing to stock Smirnoff Ice Double Black, a pre-mixed vodka drink they say overwhelms inexperienced drinkers.

Each 335 millilitre bottle contains 1.9 standard drinks.

The Campbelltown Liquor Accord includes the region's major pubs and clubs and this week it voted to ban the drink, citing alcohol fuelled violence and anti-social behaviour.

Michael Lavorato from Campbelltown Catholic Club backs the move.

"We've got evidence that it's the type of drink that is drunk a lot quicker than other drinks," he said.

He says inexperienced drinkers do not understand the drink's potency.

Local police have welcomed the ban but Smirnoff's manufacturer, Diageo, says the ban is purely cosmetic.
