Vatican-Romania talks center on immigration

The Vatican says Romania's president has thanked the Roman Catholic Church for helping Romanians who have emigrated elsewhere in Europe amid difficulties.

President Traian Basescu was meeting with Pope Benedict XVI at his summer retreat in Castel Gandolfo, near Rome.

The Vatican says the Romanian president acknowledged that the integration of Romanians abroad "has not always been easy," and that he "recognized and appreciated" the "generous" help the Catholic Church has offered.

Italy has been cracking down on crime, some of which has been blamed on Romanian immigrants.

The Vatican says the pope and Romanian leader on Saturday also discussed relations between the Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches.
