Pinochet police sentenced over priest's disappearance

A former secret police commander and three agents who served under Chile's Pinochet regime have been sentenced to seven years in prison for the 1974 disappearance of a Spanish priest.

The International Herald Tribune reports that the Santiago Court of Appeals on Monday announced the sentences for former General Manuel Conteras, retired Colonels Marcelo Moren and Miguel Krasnoff, and civilian agent Basclay Zapata.

The sentences stem from the case of Fr Antonio Llido, a Roman Catholic priest who was arrested in 1974 and never seen again.

Judge Jorge Zepeda also ordered the state to pay about US$190,000 to the priest's sister.

The commander and former agents already are serving prison terms for other rights abuses during Pinochet's 1973-90 regime.
