No. 2 man in Italian bishops' conference to become Archbishop of Florence

Pope Benedict XVI has named Bishop Giuseppe Betori, the executive secretary of the Italian bishops' conference, to become Archbishop of Florence-- and most likely a future cardinal.

Archbishop-designate Betori succeeds Cardinal Ennio Antonelli, who in June became president of the Pontifical Council for the Family.

Among his significant contributions to the Italian bishops' conference, Bishop Betori engineered the strategic campaign encouraging Catholic voters to abstain from a 2005 referendum on assisted reproduction.

The campaign had its intended effect; the referendum result was nullified by a low voter turnout.
