Archbishop will not abandon 'dog collar' protest over Mugabe

The Anglican archbishop of York, John Sentamu, has given a cautious welcome to the signing of a power-sharing agreement in Zimbabwe, but said he will not resume wearing the clerical "dog collar" he removed as a symbolic protest against the administration of President Robert Mugabe.

Sentamu, the second-highest-ranking cleric in the Church of England hierarchy, cut up his clerical collar with scissors during a television interview in December 2007, and vowed not to wear it again until Mugabe was out of office.

A spokesman for Sentamu told Ecumenical News International on 16 September that the archbishop would not be wearing his clerical collar until Mugabe was no longer president.

Sentamu fled to Britain to escape the dictatorship of Idi Amin, who ruled Uganda from 1971 to 1979.
