Ambitious parish hall plan for Malahide

A north Dublin parish which is planning to build a €7.5m parish hall has received a seven-figure donation from one well-off parishioner.

Malahide parish wants to develop the hall adjacent to St Sylvester’s Church in the town and the donation, which is confidential but said to be over €2m, has got fund-raising for the venture off to a good start.

Parish representatives are currently in discussions with planning officials from Fingal County Council about the ambitious project for Malahide, which has seen its population mushroom in the past decade.

The development – assuming it gets the planners’ go-ahead –would provide the community with a library, resource centre, four meeting rooms, a cafe, offices for clergy and a religious shop.

It would be surrounded by a cloistered garden and have underground parking.

In the process, St Sylvester’s Church itself would undergo substantial refurbishment and be provided with a new sacristy, a mortuary chapel, landscaping of the church grounds and three duplex apartments to accommodate the priests of the parish.

Last week, parish priest Fr Gerard Tanham said that assuming planning permission is forthcoming, the parish hopes building will start before the end of next year and be completed in 2010.

The parish hopes the new building will provide young people in particular with a place to gather and offer better facilities for the many community organisations in Malahide. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
