Pope to meet former hostage Ingrid Betancourt

Former hostage Ingrid Betancourt will get her wish to meet with Pope Benedict XVI when they hold private talks next week at the papal summer residence.

The meeting Sept. 1 will take place in Castel Gandolfo, a town near Rome where Benedict is spending the rest of the summer.

Betancourt, a former presidential candidate in Colombia, has credited her religious faith with helping her survive more than six years of captivity in the Colombia jungles at the hands of leftist rebels.

Shortly after her release in early July, Betancourt said she wanted to meet with Benedict.

Betancourt's entourage says she will also be received by Italy's president.

Benedict met with Betancourt's mother at the Vatican in February.
